Explosion of Content: How machines are taking over creativity

As we’ve already discussed in another article, the world of content creation is undergoing significant changes thanks to advancements in Generative AI. From writing blog posts to generating images and even videos, the today’s creative efforts are drastically different than only a few years ago.

The fusion of creativity and technology becomes the new standard, as software tools like ChatGPT help with writing articles, stories and even with illustrations. But how do we navigate the upcoming years, where the vast majority of consumed information didn’t originate by traditional human production?

Some estimates say that in the next few years, over 90% of content will be generated by AI . As we still stand on the start of this transformation, the need for digital literacy becomes higher than ever.

In this blog post, we’ll explore the current state of content creation, the impact of Generative AI, and what lies ahead for creators.

So, let’s dive into the era where media creation is easier than ever, resulting in content explosion which will flood the already massive scale of internet.

Evolution of Expression: From Papyrus Scrolls to Digital Ink

If we briefly summarize the history, the earliest forms of content creation involved scribing tales on papyrus scrolls. As you can imagine the scale of written text and drawn images was very small.

Although handwriting could generate more and more manuscripts, the first big revolution came with letterpress printing in 15th century. Firstly manual and eventually automatic, printing press revolutionized the dissemination of information, paving the way for books and newspapers to reach wider audiences.

The next big revolution came in 20th century and internet, as the dawn of the digital age brought content creation to unimaginable scale. The transition to “digital ink” enabled not only easy copying, but also made information available to everyone instantly, transcending previous physical limitations.

Fast forward to today, we stand at the start of another revolution, as Generative AI is taking over the production of all media. While internet already had the possibility to spread information instantly, with AI tools we are now able to produce the content instantly.

Content Creation in the Age of Generative AI

As we enter the new era in which machines can produce much more content than people, the whole creative landscape is shaking in its foundations. This new technology streamlines many different processes and challenges creators to redefine their roles.

Anyone who produces content can now easily collaborate with intelligent algorithms to achieve results that were unimaginable only a few years ago, reserved only to big media publishing teams in the past.

The integration of generative AI brings many benefits, with the most prominent being the improvement of overall productivity and quality.

One of the examples can be keyword research and formatting. With these mundane aspects handled efficiently by advanced software tools, the creator can devote more time and energy to crafting engaging content.

This not only streamlines the workflow but also ensures that the final output is polished, well-informed, and it hopefully resonates with target audience.

Generative AI also helps with overcoming creative blocks, as the algorithms can provide fresh perspectives and spark new ideas. All it takes is a simple prompt like “How can I continue with my article?” and the response will basically guide you to finish line.

The once exclusive domain of media giants is now open for anyone with a passion for producing text or imagery, and a desire to push the boundaries of creative expression.

However, up to this point, we have discussed only all the positive aspects and benefits that it brings. But how do we ensure that these new technologies are used responsibly and with good intent?

Individuals now wield creative power that can be misused for spread of propaganda or misinformation, which are threats that caused a lot of harm in the past.

Paradise for disinformation?

With the rapid development of Generative AI tools, the boundaries between authentic and fabricated content blur. This fact allows people with malicious intent to exploit this technology, generating sophisticated disinformation that can deceive and manipulate.

In the past, the creation of disinformation required a certain level of skill and resources, but with the advent of advanced Generative AI tools, it is now easier than ever. In today’s digital era, deceptive information can be generated at an unprecedented scale. With the advanced software tools, it becomes very easy to produce manipulated content, deepfakes, and other misinformation that undermine trust in all digital communication.

Although it was possible to generate real-looking fake images in the past, the quality is now higher, and the time of production much shorter. This has elevated the sophistication of visual deception to an alarming level. We find ourselves in an era where we cannot trust our eyes anymore.

The hyper-realistic nature of AI-generated content allows to make videos of politicians, news reporters or celebrities saying basically anything. This frightful capability poses significant challenges to the trustworthiness of visual media, as AI technology can seamlessly manipulate facial expressions, voice, and body language to fabricate convincing yet entirely fictional scenarios.

As the possibility of encountering disinformation increases, there emerges a critical need for media literacy in our society. It is more important than ever to react to news calmly and approach information with a healthy dose of skepticism.

Relying on multiple sources for verification and cross-referencing facts should become the new standard, otherwise we risk falling prey to the web of misinformation.

Content Overflow: Status Quo or Major Change?

But if we momentarily set aside thoughts about the amount of content Generative AI can produce and take a step back, we might ask: Does anything truly change at all? After all, the digital world is already saturated with an immense volume of content.

According to recent data from 2024, over 500 hours of video content is uploaded to YouTube every minute — an astounding figure that was already similar in 2022 when Generative AI tools were not yet available to the public. This staggering volume highlights the already monstrous scale of content creation and advanced AI algorithms might not really change anything, since people were overwhelmed by various media even without them.

At the moment, it looks like the main benefit of Generative AI lies in serving as a complementary tool rather than a substitute for content creation. Recognizing its role as an augmentation to human creativity, content creators can harness the power of Generative AI to amplify their ideas and streamline their processes.

Enormous amount of online content is already the status quo, and although the volume of media will only be getting bigger, the main change facilitated by Generative AI lies in the simplicity of production.

The capacity of what people can consume reached its limit many years ago, marking already the present era with the challenge of information overflow rather than a concern that it will happen due to AI in the future.

Navigating the Digital Sea: Content Evolution, Generative AI, and Disinformation Challenges

In today’s exploration, we’ve delved into the transformative journey of content creation, marked by the profound impact of Generative AI and the challenges it brings.

As we’ve witnessed, this technology is reshaping the way we generate, consume, and interact with content. It is another historical milestone revolutionizing the dynamics of the media world.

The fusion of creativity and technology is becoming the new norm, making it increasingly easier to produce content. However, this ease also poses a challenge for content creators, as rising above all the generated noise can be more demanding.

Capturing anyone’s attention will likely become harder, with highly personalized AI content aimed at engaging users amid an abundance of information. A trend reminiscent of the strategies seen in social media over the last two decades.

We have also delved into the darker side, acknowledging the potential misuse of Generative AI in generating disinformation. The rise of manipulated content poses challenges to trust and authenticity, underscoring the critical need for media literacy and responsible use of this technology.

While the exact trajectory of AI industry remains uncertain, one thing is clear: Generative AI is taking the center stage with its unmatched ability for instant content production, exceeding traditional human output.

What do you think? Will the world undergo a substantial change with the majority of content being generated by AI, or is the existing volume of information so vast that it might not cause a big change?
